Gauteng-based multidisciplinary engineering firm Thuthuka Group Limited has strengthened its offering to the petrochemical industry through the acquisition of ERD (Pty) Ltd, a Sasolburg-based company that specialises in the fabrication, refurbishment and repair of pressure vessels, heat exchangers, economisers, boilers, finned tubes, tanks, silos, pressurised systems, ducting and general structural steel work, predominately for the chemical and petrochemical industries.
The new company will fall under the Thuthuka Group’s industrial division and will be headed up by Rakesh Mohan as the managing director. Apart from a highly skilled work force, ERD brings with it considerable resources in terms of infrastructure and equipment.
TGL’s managing director Bill Pullen says, “The acquisition is part of TGL’s natural expansion process, enabling the group to take an evolutionary step in terms of growing the business to meet TGL’s future requirements internally, while ERD will still operate as an independent company servicing the industrial and mining markets.
‘As it services several of the same markets as TGL, there is great synergy between the two companies although it is anticipated that ERD will give TGL increased exposure to the petrochemical industry.’
ERD’s quality systems are SANS 9001:2000 accredited and as a preferred supplier of services to Sasol, the company is familiar with ASME, API, BS, EN and AD-Merkblatter codes as well as the Sasol engineering codes and specifications. ERD has also passed its first stage audit in the process of achieving its OSHAS 18000 certification.
Mohan comments, “From ERD’s perspective, this acquisition gives us access to the engineering and design capabilities of TGL, which we haven’t been able to source locally in Sasolburg in terms of our strategic business model. We wanted to increase our engineering expertise and grow our business in order to strengthen our offering to our clients. TGL can provide ERD with additional engineering capabilities, process, electrical and mechanical, thereby opening up new markets for both parties.”
