KLOMAC Refurbishes Botswana Water Utilities Plant

22 August 2007

Thuthuka Group Limited company Klomac is nearing completion of the R2.5m refurbishment of two OSEC on-site electrolytic chlorination plants for Botswana's Water Utilities Corporation.

The OSEC system uses a brine solution, prepared on site, to generate sodium hypochlorite for the disinfection of water. Compared to the use of chlorine gas, this a commercially viable process, particularly when chlorine gas has to be transported long distances from the point of manufacture to the water treatment works, as is the case in Botswana. It is also a safer chemical to deal with on site.

Established in 1979, Klomac is the official southern African agent for Wallace & Tiernan chemical dosing equipment for the water treatment industry. It is around this range of products that Klomac has built its market in South Africa and neighbouring territories.

Klomac has been active in Botswana since 1994 and currently has chemical dosing installations at a number of water treatment plants, from Sowa in the north to Lobatse in the south. These installations range from simple, manually-operated chlorine dosing stations, to automatic dosing systems using on-line water quality measuring instruments to automatically control the chemical dosage and transmit water quality information to a central control room via telemetry. OSEC systems have been installed at four sites including the prestigious North South Carrier water project, which delivers water over a distance of some 350 km from the Letsibogo Dam near Selebi Phikwe to Palapye, Mahalapye and Gaborone.

Klomac is currently involved in a R2m contract for the supply and installation of chemical dosing equipment for the Shashe Water Treatment Works, which is being upgraded. Klomac also has bids in to supply on-line water quality measuring instruments for the North South Carrier Treatment Works and chemical dosing equipment for the upgrading of the Selebi Phikwe Water Treatment Works.

The major client in this activity is the Water Utilities Corporation, the authority responsible for the supply of potable water to the urban areas of Botswana. Some work has also been done for the Department of Water Affairs, whose responsibility is to supply the rural areas of Botswana with potable water.
